Pg 184. "'Never a fool, Miss Wednesbury, and never hateful. I don't know what happened to shatter your opinion of yourself, but I hope to restore it." I think it is odd that Y'ang-Yeovil is so kind to Robin, even though he knows that she had been helping Gully. However, it showed how much nicer the rest of the world, or at least some of it, is compared to Gully. - Christian Graham

RE: christian i also think that Yeovil fancied robin. after the spanish stairs he thought he may have took a liking to Robin. So I don't think that he is "nicer" than the world i just think he has developed a liking for Robin. which i also find weird in itself beause he knows nothing about her and yet he finds himself attracted to her and complimenting and comforting her... weird :p

I agree, but there may be more to it than that. He may be trying to begin to trick her into abandoning Gully and joining him on trying to stop Gully with her power. If this is the case, it didn't work. -Bryant Sell

Page 184-"I am betraying him." "Then don't tell me." At this point Robin Wednesbury becomes a tratior. She betrayes Gully for her own reasons. Gully has changed. he was nice to her , he payed her, and she did nothing to repay him. She took advantage of him. She says that she has to find her mother and sisters herself and she doesn't want help, but why did she have to go betray Gully. I think she did it for her own good. Maybe she was looking for a reward. I think it was a jerk move. *Kayle Giarth*

Page 186- "Ah, he's wiked? I knew it. Like a Borgia, you said. A wiked Borgia with black eyes and lines in his face. That must account for the pattern." "Pattern my dear?" "Yes. I can see a strange pattern over his face... not the usual electricity of nerve and muscle. Something laid over that. It fascinated me from the beginning." What sort of pattern do you mean?" "Fantastic... wonderfully evil. I can't describe it. Give me something to write with. I'll show you."Presteign took out a silver mounted slab of crystal and handed it to Olivia. She touched it with her fingertip; a black dot appeared. She moved her finger and the dot elongated into a line. With quick strokes she sketched the hideous swirls and blazons of a devil mask.
The pattern that Olivia can see on Gully's face is the scars from his tatoo. The reason she can see it is because she has special vision and she is fascinated by the pattern on Gully's face. She isn't aware of what the pattern is so she talks about it with her father and he gets suspiscious remembering that the only way they recognized Gully was by his strange tatoo on his face. Olivia describes it as wonderfully evil and Presteign instantly knows.-Mara Hesley

I think it's amazing that Olivia can see through his mask and reveal his true self by just looking at him. But, I don't understand why she wants to be around him so much if she can see right through him. Olivia is a smart and heavily protected child. Maybe this is her way of rebelling against her father. Or maybe she just doesn't know what she's getting herself into. Either way, it's very interesting and suspenceful. I can't wait to read into the situation more. (: -Heather Gibson

I agree with you Heather. I'm excited to read more about Gully and Olivia. And I'm glad that Gully finally has someone as a friend.-Kelsey Baker

Page 194. 'It's not real,' he muttered. 'It couldn't be real. It's a sign, a good luck sign... a Guadian Angel. It saved me on the Spanish Star. It's telling me to go ahead and find Lindsey Joyce.' This whole idea is amazing. I don't quite understand how a firery image of him burning in hell is like an angel. To me, that doesn't make sense. I think the author is letting the reader understand that Gully doesn't grasp how wrong his actions are. -Heather Gibson

Re: Gully is also a pretty crazy charater, all what he has gone through mabey he has just gone through too much and hes wackin' out. Gully need some motive to do what it is that he wants, so mabey thats what he wanted so he saw it to help him on his quest. -*Aaron Gromiller*

I agree with Heather about how Gully doesnt grasp how wrong his actions are but i believe that he knows this firery image cant be good. I think Gully is saying that he believes it is a guardian angel so he can convince himself that what he is doing is ok.-Taylor Vladic

Pg. 193. "Overboard...all of them...six hundred....Stripped 'em..took their clothes, money, jewels, baggage...Put 'em through the airlock in batches. Christ!" It still seems in the future that there is still betrayal and lying going on. Kempsey tells them that he will take them to earth, but he doesn't. He scuttles them. -*Aaron Gromiller*

from page 189-191(ish) Foyle was speaking to the whores and pimps in the gutter language. This reminded me of how Calpurnia in TKMB spoke differently to the Finch family than she did to the people at church. I was assuming that Foyle's reason for doing this was the same as Calpurnia's. Maybe he did that so he could get more information out of them... if he spoke in more proper english, they might think he thinks he is higher than them and is speaking down to them, but if he speaks their language, he is just as good as they are. -Janelle Meadows

I definitely agree with Janelle. If he would have spoke proper English to them i don't think they would have seen his as an equal, they probably would have thought he was better than them maybe. - victor lemus.

Pg.188: "He thinks he invented it. He remembered it. Geoffrey Fourmyle is the name they use in the megalomania test down in Combined Hospital in Mexico City. I used the Megal Mood on Foyle when i tried to open him up" Dagenham is saying this and i wonder if he knew at the first moment that Fourmyle was Foyle why didnt he do anything? Dagenham must be planning to take down Gully in a big way and i think he wants to do it on his own.- Taylor Vladic

Pg. 195: "What's a matter, you?" he whispered."Think of the six hundred, scuttle...Think of yourself...Are you turning inot a white-livered Cellar Christian turning the other cheek and whining forgiveness? Olivia, what are you doing to me? Give me strength, not cowardice..." I thought it was funny that he blamed this on Olivia. Just because he was feeling regret for killing a man, doen't mean you can blame it on someone else. I also thought it was funny that because he was feeling regret, which is a natural feeling, that it made him a Christian, instead of an actual human.

Pg 184-186: Presteign is talking to his daughter like how you would talk to a lover. He saids" There's no danger, my love. If I did not read this and had background information I would say he is not talk to his daughter but his wife. No father I have every know calls their daughter my love. - Katelyn Broughton

Pg.188. "He nodded, almost guiltily. "It's ridiculous. Grotesque. But I am. You've changed me completely. I'm a sane man again." He pressed his face to the wall too, and they kissed through three inches of lead glass." I don't understand why they don't sleep in the same room if they are in love with each other; is it against the time period to sleep in same room yet alone in the same bed?? Or is it just that he doesn't want to until his job is completely finished so that if he gets killed she won't have a big emotional breakdown.?? -- Jameson Holsinger :)

Re: I think you may be forgetting that Saul Dagenham is "hot" or radioactive. He is only allowed in the same room as others for 30 minutes. It is hazardous to her health, otherwise I'm sure they'd be in the same room. - Danielle Heininger

Response: Danielle raises a good point right there. After not even that long in the same room, health becomes an issue. -Joel Redfoot

pg.196- Him loving Olivia is giving him a sense of guilt, and care. like how he let the man die, instead of letting him live in pain. - Haley Kline

Pg. 186" They stopped before a six-hundered-year-old Chippendale cabiet. Presteign took out a ilver-mounted slab of crystal and handed it to Olivia. She touched it with her fingertip; a black dot appeared. She moved her finger and the dot elongated into a line. With quick strokes she sketched the hideous swirls and blazons of a devil mask." I find this very interesting because Olivia Presteign is blind and it shows how she has heightened her other senses to do such things. - Tyler Slippy
